Cervical Screening – Smear Tests
Cervical Screening (Smear Test): Cytology and HPV Testing
Regular cervical screening is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer. At our practice, we offer comprehensive cervical screening with both cytology and HPV testing performed on all routine smear samples, providing a more detailed assessment of cervical health.
Why cervical screening is important
Most cervical cancers develop slowly from early cellular changes in the cervix, usually associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Screening allows these changes to be identified long before cancer develops, enabling early monitoring or treatment if required.
Our approach to screening
At our clinic, each cervical smear includes:
- HPV testing – to detect high-risk HPV strains associated with cervical cancer
- Cervical cytology – microscopic examination of cervical cells to identify early abnormalities
Performing both tests routinely provides a comprehensive evaluation of cervical health.
Screening intervals
The NHS cervical screening programme is transitioning to HPV-based screening every five years for most patients when results are normal.
However, some patients prefer more frequent screening for reassurance or personal health monitoring. There is no medical concern with having cervical screening more frequently, including annually, if this is your preference.
What happens during the test
A cervical smear is a straightforward procedure carried out by an experienced clinician or nurse and usually takes only a few minutes:
- A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina to visualise the cervix.
- A soft brush is used to collect a small sample of cervical cells.
- The sample is sent to the laboratory for HPV testing and cytological analysis.
The test may feel slightly uncomfortable but should not be painful.
Who may benefit from private screening
Private cervical screening can be helpful if you:
- Prefer more frequent screening than NHS intervals
- Would like both HPV testing and cytology performed routinely
- Are outside the NHS screening schedule
- Prefer flexible appointment times and rapid access to testing
Book an appointment
If you would like to arrange cervical screening, please contact our reception team or book online. Our clinicians will be happy to discuss the most appropriate screening schedule for you.A cervical smear test (also known as cervical screening) checks the health of your cervix. The test looks for certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can sometimes cause changes in the cervical cells and, over time, may lead to cervical cancer.
In the UK, women and people with a cervix aged 25–64 are invited for regular screening on the NHS. The NHS have reported that the time inbetween tests for those that test negative for HPV is now every 5 years from 3 years.
At Ciencia Health , we understand that some people prefer to be tested more frequently for reassurance. In countries such as the US and Australia, cervical screening is often carried out every year. If you are concerned, or would simply like the reassurance of a test, you can book an appointment with one of our experienced Private GPs.
Please note this is not an emergency service , please call NHS 111 if you are concerned or worried.
